Daren E. Miller: My CFA Journey
After I earned the CFA designation in 1999, passing each exam on the first attempt, I proudly secured a coveted volunteer position as a senior CFA Level III grader, spending two weeks each summer grading thousands of CFA exams in Charlottesville, Virginia. Grading was a fun assignment, and the experience serves as the foundation for my "less is more" maxim for the CFA Level III exam.
I earned my CFA designation while working as an economist with the New Brunswick Investment Management Corporation in Fredericton in my home province of New Brunswick, Canada. Part of my job was to write investment policy statements for several institutional clients, and that experience has influenced how I teach CFA Level III portfolio management.
During the 2000s, I would serve on hearing panels that ruled on Professional Conduct Program (PCP) investigations, mainly involving alleged exam cheating. I also wrote book reviews and summaries of scholarly investment articles for various CFA publications.
Academically, I earned a master's degree in economics from the celebrated University of Cambridge at Gonville & Caius College (Stephen Hawking fans will know that Caius was his college, too). I was fortunate to have won a Chevening Scholarship, awarded by the UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office, which paid for all of my British university fees as a Canadian student. That was such a huge help, especially when the Canadian dollar was trading at historical lows of around C$2.40 per pound in 1995.
I've taught the CFA Program in my own classroom in Calgary, as well as in-person in Vancouver, London, Paris, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Hong Kong.
My job is to empower you to pass your CFA exams and earn the CFA charter as quickly and as painlessly as possible. Just because life happens does not mean that you are unable to pass the CFA exams. I believe that anybody can earn the CFA designation, no matter your background.
